Feed enters at the bottom of the heating tubes; as it heats, vapour forms and its upward force drives liquid and vapour up the tubes together. A fairly large temperature difference between the heating and boiling sides is needed, otherwise the vapour flow has too little energy to lift the liquid and form the film.
